Turkey is a country located at the crossroads of Europe and Asia, with a population of about 86 million people. It is a democratic, secular, unitary, constitutional republic with a diverse culture and history. The official language is Turkish, and the currency is the Turkish lira. Turkey is a member of the UN, NATO. The country has a mixed economy with a strong industrial sector, and it is a major producer and exporter of textiles, clothing, and agricultural products. Turkey has a varied landscape, with a long coastline along the Black Sea and the Mediterranean Sea, and it is home to several mountain ranges, including the Taurus Mountains and the Pontic Mountains. The country’s largest city is Istanbul, which is located on the Bosporus Strait and is known for its historical and cultural sites, including the Hagia Sophia and the Blue Mosque. Other major cities include the capital, Ankara, and Izmir, which are located on the Aegean coast. Turkey is located in southwestern Asia and southeastern Europe, with a land area of about 783,000 square kilometers (about 301,000 square miles). It is bordered by eight countries: Bulgaria to the northwest, Greece to the west, Georgia to the northeast, Armenia, Azerbaijan, and Iran to the east, and Iraq and Syria to the southeast.
